Common Unhealthy Eating Habits

Are you guilty of consuming food in an unbalanced way?

Would you consider yourself a healthy eater or do your eating habits leave a lot to be desired? Are you constantly fighting the excess weight you’ve put on, trying out fad diets, or spending time in and out of the doctor’s office because you don’t feel well? If this sounds like you, there is a good chance that you have some very unhealthy eating habits to address.

This isn’t anything to be ashamed of. In fact, many people eat in ways that are not optimal for their bodies or good health. Most importantly, with some assistance, you can become a more conscientious eater and make choices that increase your energy, decrease your risk for obesity and disease, and allow you to socialize and enjoy your favorite foods and snacks without guilt.

The following list addresses the most common unhealthy eating habits and what can be done to stop them.

Binge Eating or Binging

When you plow through a bag of chips or cookies without realizing you’re doing it, you’re binging. Among one of the most unbalanced ways to eat, it is often caused by some form of emotional trigger. Rather than respond to the feelings that you’re having (sadness, anger, boredom), you eat large quantities of food in short periods of time.

Cravings

If you won’t rest until you’ve eaten a pint of rocky road ice cream or satisfied your need for something savory by eating a bunch of pickles and washing it down with an extra large slushy drink, you’re succumbing to cravings. When your body isn’t getting the right type or amount of food that it needs to thrive, it may cause you to think about or even obsess over food. Cravings can occur at the most random times and interfere with normal eating schedules.

Emotional Eating

When you have a strong urge to eat because you’re feeling emotional, it could hurt your health. Unless you’re able to identify the cause of your emotions and find other ways to cope with them, you’ll probably consume more calories than you need to eat. It’s important to do something in place of eating when your emotions are strong. Taking a brisk walk around the block allows you to come to grips with what you’re feeling so you can decide whether or not eating will actually help you or hinder you.

Eating for Taste

If you love the taste of a certain type of food and aren’t hungry enough to eat it, but you still do, you might have a problem. This unhealthy way to eat could become very problematic especially since there are so many delicious food varieties to choose from. If eating is something that brings you distinct pleasure, and you literally describe each ingredient in a dish in vivid detail, it’s likely because you live to eat not eat to live.

Night Snacking

You should never eat after dinner. Your body needs time to recover. Eating late at night can significantly affect your sleep routine in a negative way. Don’t disrupt your rest by giving yourself a bad case of indigestion by eating too late at night.

Habitual Eating

If you’re in the habit of eating out with friends on a weekly basis or ordering something to snack on every time you go to the movies whether you’re hungry or not, you’re eating habitually. That means that you’ve made it a habit to eat. Instead of satisfying your body’s need for nourishment, you’ll literally eat excess calories for no reason.
